Eagles,

Not to
be outdone by the Air Force, the Navy's Fighter Squadron
Composite 13 ("The Saints") sent two of their
adversary F-5E Tiger IIs for the static display. Like most
military aviation enthusiasts, I think that adversary jets are
extremely cool, and I was thrilled to see two very colorful
examples at Moffett this year.
The first (above and right) was
F-5E BuNo. 160796, wearing a three-tone blue camouflage scheme
and carrying bort number "24." This airplane
has something of an interesting history, having originally been
built by Northrop in 1973 for South Vietnam. In 1975, as
the South collapsed, this airplane was one of a handful of Tigers to be
spirited away to the United States before the arrival of the
communists. The USAF gave it
the serial number 73-900 and flew it as a
dedicated air-to-air "threat simulator" in its
Aggressor program. Sometime before 1987, it was
transferred to the Navy and given the BuNo. 160796,
serving with several fleet adversary squadrons (including
VF-126 "Bandits" on the west coast and VF-43
"Challengers" on the east coast).
Since 1996, it has been operating with VFC-13 out of NAS
Fallon, NV, again in the adversary role.
The second aircraft (below) was
F-5E BuNo. 741556, which was painted in a two-tone blue-gray
tactical scheme and carried the bort number
"12." It too spent many years as a USAF
Aggressor, although unlike its wingmate, it never served with a
foreign air force. When it was transferred to the Navy
sometime before 1992, its USAF serial number (74-1556) was
simply translated directly into a Navy BuNo. Before
joining VFC-13 in 1996, it was operated by VF-45
"Blackbirds", the Navy's adversary squadron at NAS Key West. |

Both
of these F-5Es underwent airframe modifications to improve their handling
qualities. The main visual indicator of this
modification is the flattened "shark's nose"
or "duckbill" radome, which is highlighted to good effect in
each of these two
photographs. Not all of VFC-13's F-5s have the
duckbill radome; some retain the original rounded nose
cone.
These images also provide
a good look at the external housings for the internal
cannon, 20mm, type M39A2, two each. The Tiger is
also capable of carrying wingtip Sidewinders and a
variety of other stores, although these VFC-13 aircraft
were displayed in a clean configuration. |

All in all, this year's Air
& Space Expo showcased a lot of interesting
airplanes under a gorgeous California summer sky.
I saw some things that I hadn't seen before, took
roughly 384 megabytes' worth of digital still
photos, and only got a little bit sunburned. On
balance, not a bad way to spend a Saturday. - RJL
