U.S.
Navy Ship 20th Century Historical Database
This particular project took three years to assemble
and was ultimately donated by its creator, Michael Cardin, to the U.S. Naval War
College. Using a historical dataset drawn from the multi-volume Dictionary
of American Fighting Ships, it includes the latest additions to the fleet
and allows searches by name, class, type, and hull number; includes data on
foreign transfers and cancelled projects; and has a very useful feature that
will show you the complete active fleet roster on any given date. That
last handful of search tools make this an extremely valuable force assessment
tool.

The Mystery of
the Hapless Varyag
Compiled by Ahmet H. Demirayak, this site tracks the mysterious fate of the
former Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag, the unfinished second hull of the Kuznetsov
class of fixed-wing aircraft carriers. Ostensibly purchased by a Chinese
entertainment company for conversion to a floating casino and entertainment
center (much like Minsk), observers have long suspected the involvement
of the People's Liberation Army Navy (which presumably would be interested in
the Varyag as a study hull). Today, no moves appear to have been
made toward casino conversion, and the hull itself is apparently moored at the
PLAN naval base at Dalian. Includes some very unique photos compiled from
various sources.
